On May 21, 2006, at the Yusupov Palace on the Moika was opened an exhibition of paintings from the collection of the Gatchina Palace was opened. These were paintings of the late XVII - early. XX centuries (pre-war period), and also a collection of works acquired from private collections.
The Art Gallery of the Gatchina Palace began to form with its first owner, the Duke G. Orlov. Many works have been presented to him by Catherine II.
After the death of GG Orlov, Gatchina became the State property and was presented to the Grand Duke Paul Petrovich, together with all collections in the palace. Picturesque collection was enriched by all subsequent owners and by 1917, there were more than 2000 paintings (including 632 portraits - it was the most important collection of portraits in Russia). At the exhibitions in 1870, 1902, and 1905 on the history of Russian art canvases, Gatchina occupied a significant place.
At the exhibition in the Yusupov Palace are displayed some paintings which were rarely exhibited in the museum of the Gatchina Palace.
